MTH106 CLASS VOL 1 and 2

In this volume of the MTH106 class the rudiment of Set
Theory is discussed.

What is Set Theory in simple terms?

Set theory in simple terms could be seen as approaches that implore to interpret different set problems.

It is therefore important to know the symbols used in set theories and what purpose they serve.

Symbols used in set theory and their meaning?

{}: This is called a set.

It is a combination of all elements.

Let’s take for example;

Let set A be odd numbers and let B be even numbers.

Set A = {1,3,5,7}

Set B = {2,4,6,8

To ensure you have an understanding about set, do well to take a break, and attempt
the questions below:

1. Set C= to the days of the week

2. Set F = to the numbers between 10-15

3. Set B = to the classes of food

4. Set G = the months before may

5. Set P = the alphabet before the letter E

∪: This is called Union.

Union serves as an umbrella for all the element that belongs to all sets.

In other words, all the elements that belong to a particular set or series of sets can be found in the union.

Let’s take for example;

∪: {1,2,3,4,5,6,8}

Set A = {1,2,3,5}

 Set B = {2,4,6,8}

∩: Intersection.

These are elements that you may find in both set A and set B.

Let’s go back to our formal examples;

Set A = {1,2,3,5}

Set B = {2,4,6,8}

Let’s take, for example.

A ∩ B = {2}

A intersects B when the element of B is found in A or the other way.
