Statistics have shown that the current Nigerian government through the Federal Ministry of Education and the National University Commission is intentional about providing an enabling environment to allow good delivery of quality education.
Â
According to a publication made in the first quarter of the year 2024, by the incumbent president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, in the person of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the academic space, he said, ‘’ Considering the demographic changes occurring in our great nation, the Federal Government of Nigeria has seen the necessity of letting graduates of the National Open University of Nigeria take place in the NYSC Scheme.
Â
There has been a controversy on whether the students of the National Open University of Nigeria are qualified to secure a student loan in the ZERO-INTEREST credit facility made available for undergraduate students in Federal and State Universities owned or managed by the government.
Â
The controversy is that for a student to be eligible for this loan, the student in question must have a JAMB IDENTITY NUMBER.
Â
As of a few years back, unfortunately having a JAMB IDENTITY NUMBER is not required to secure admission to the National Open University of Nigeria.
Â
With this, it was made clear by the NELFUND Managing Director, the person of Mr. Akintunde Sawyerr that the National Open University of Nigeria is not eligible for the NELFUND program.
Â
But recently, during the last quarter of 2024, the National Open University of Nigeria sent a memo indicating that students who got admitted into the National Open University of Nigeria in 2017 and above should regulate their admission with JAMB.
Â
Also, it is now a requirement for students who are applying for admission to the National Open University of Nigeria to get a JAMB IDENTITY NUMBER as it is required to process their admission.
In conclusion, students are eagerly anticipating a publication from NELFUND specifying if the student at the National Open University of Nigeria is now eligible to apply for the  Nigeria Education Loan Fund since students of the National Open University of Nigeria now have the JAMB IDENTITY NUMBER
